While the Plus Size Certified™ program addresses a broad range of businesses and organizations, we are initially focused on two industries that affect the plus size community most dramatically: Healthcare and Fitness.
Hospitals, clinics and doctors’ offices might not seem like candidates for being Plus Size Certified™, but they are still a business. A plus size individual would much rather go to a Plus Size Certified™ hospital or physician’s office where it is known they have larger gowns, scales that go over 300 pounds, suitable seating in waiting areas and exam rooms. All health care facilities, public or private, should be at the forefront promoting acceptance of people of size.
Fitness Centers and Gyms:
These facilities are strikingly deficient in properly accommodating those affected by weight issues. From not having proper, safe and comfortable seating, size-friendly exercise equipment, showers, towels and bathrooms that accommodate members with obesity, graphics and marketing images that omit those with overweight or obesity, not using people first language, demonstrating a lack of understanding of the disease of obesity, pushing “willpower” and “move more and eat less", those with obesity are essentially told they are unwelcome and sidelined by fitness centers and gyms.
